ROK Uri Party proposes inter-Korean summit
2007-06-07 00:00

SEOUL, June 7 (Xinhua) -- The pro-government Uri Party proposed Thursday to hold the second Inter-Korean summit on Aug. 15 to ease tension over the nuclear standoff and promote inter-Korean ties.

"The most effective way to resolve this difficult issue is for President Roh Moo-hyun and Chairman Kim Jong-il to meet at the earliest date," said Uri Party's chairman Chung Sye-kyun during his speech to a National Assembly session on Thursday.

He suggested Roh hold the second inter-Korean summit on the southern resort island of Jeju on Aug. 15, the common holiday for both South Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) commemorating Korean's independence from Japanese colonial ruling on Aug. 15, 1945.

The leaders of the Koreas should make "a historic decision" to help resolve the dispute over the nuclear standoff and improve the inter-Korean relations, Chung said.

However, the Grand National Party (GNP) dubbed the proposed summit a political move designed to influence December's presidential election.

Former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung conducted a historic visit to Pyongyang in June 2000 and held the first-ever Inter-Korean Summit with DPRK's top leader Kim Jong-il.
